LEV Awareness Course (In-House)

OXYL8 LEV AWARENESS COURSE

This in-house course provides participants with a clear understanding of the purpose and the key components of LEV systems, while also equipping them with the knowledge required to operate, check, and maintain them effectively.

Duration: 1 Day (Approx. 6–7 hours)

Audience: Employees, supervisors, maintenance staff, safety representatives

Outcome: Participants will understand the purpose, operation, limitations, and legal responsibilities relating to LEV systems.

The following is a suggested programme for the OXYL8 LEV Awareness course but the final structure and content can be fine-tuned to mirror specific client requirements.


09:00 – 09:15 | Welcome & Introduction

  • Trainer introduction

  • Participant introductions

  • Course objectives and outline

  • Brief overview of workplace health risks from airborne contaminants


09:15 – 10:00 | Health Hazards & Legal Requirements

  • Common airborne hazards (dusts, fumes, mists, vapours, gases)

  • Health effects: short-term and long-term exposure

  • Relevant legislation and guidance (e.g., COSHH Regulations)

  • Employer and employee responsibilities

  • Importance of exposure control hierarchy (substitution, isolation, LEV, PPE, etc.)


10:00 – 10:45 | What is Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV)?

  • Purpose and core principles of LEV

  • Basic components:

    • Hood / capture device

    • Ducting

    • Air cleaner / filter

    • Fan

    • Discharge

  • How LEV controls airborne contaminants at source

  • Differences between general ventilation and LEV

10:45 – 11:00 | Break


11:00 – 12:00 | Understanding LEV Performance

  • Airflow movement and capture efficiency

  • Indicators of correct function (smoke tests, gauges, airflow checks)

  • Common causes of poor performance

  • Recognising visible signs of malfunction


12:00 – 12:45 | Practical Demonstration / Workplace Walkthrough

(If possible, conducted in the participants’ work area)

  • Identify LEV systems in use

  • Observe hoods in action

  • Demonstrate airflow visualisation (e.g., smoke tube)

  • How to report issues and what to look for during daily use

12:45 – 13:30 | Lunch Break


13:30 – 14:15 | Inspection, Maintenance & Testing

  • Routine user checks (daily or before use)

  • Simple cleaning and filter awareness

  • Understanding LEV Thorough Examination & Test (TExT) requirements (every 14 months or specified period)

  • Importance of keeping records and labelling


14:15 – 15:00 | Safe Working Practices

  • How to use LEV correctly during operations

  • Positioning work/materials within the capture zone

  • Good operator habits

  • Limitations of LEV & when additional controls/PPE are required


15:00 – 15:45 | Knowledge Check & Discussion

  • Short quiz or group problem-solving exercise

  • Review of key learning points

  • Participant questions and workplace-specific issues


15:45 – 16:15 | Short MCQ, Summary & Close

  • Short MCQ on day’s programme

  • Evaluation forms and final Q&A
