P304 – CoSHH – Fundamentals of Risk Assessment & Control
BOHS Level 4 Qualification
P304 is an advanced programme focused on the principles and practical application of undertaking Risk Assessments and determining Controls required – under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (CoSHH) Regulations.
This qualification teaches candidates how to identify hazardous substances in a work environment, and how to control them effectively, to a standard which prevents or reduces risks of occupational ill-health. .
Who Should Attend
This course is suitable for:
- Specialist practitioners undertaking CoSHH Risk Assessments and/or specifying Controls
- Health & Safety professionals responsible for CoSHH compliance
- LEV practitioners seeking a broader understanding of CoSHH Risk Assessments
- Managers and other Duty Holders under CoSHH
- Those progressing through the BOHS Level 4 Occupational Hygiene pathway
Course Overview
The programme provides structured coverage of:
- The legal framework under COSHH Regulations
- Introduction to “Hazard” and “Risk”
- Fundamental principles of Risk Assessments
- Making a Risk Assessment
- Workplace Controls
P304 forms a core component of the BOHS Level 4 qualification pathway.
What You Will Learn

- The objectives and limitations of workplace CoSHH Risk Assessments
- How to design an Hazardous Substance idenfication and quantification strategy
- The difference berween “Hazard” and “Risk”
- How to interpret time-weighted averages (TWAs) and short-term exposure limits (STELs)
- The influence of task variability and work patterns on exposure risk
- PPE and its role
- How air monitoring data informs the Risk Assessment process
Application to Control Measures
P304 strengthens professional judgement by linking “suitable and sufficient” Risk Assessments to practical control decisions.
The module supports informed evaluation of engineering controls, including LEV, and assists duty holders in determining whether exposure risks are adequately controlled.
Important Note on Competency
P304 develops knowledge of startegies and practicalities for CoSHH Risk Assessments.
Competence to undertake independent Risk Assessments requires appropriate practical experience in addition to formal qualification.
Assessment
The qualification assessment consists of a BOHS-set written examination designed to test applied understanding and interpretation skills and a supervised Formative Risk Assessment Practical (in class on second day).
- Structured technical questions
- MSDS data interpretation
- Quantifying Hazard and Risk
- Application of COSHH regulatory principles
Successful candidates are awarded the BOHS P304 Certificate.
